Aminohapot ovat proteiinien rakennusosia. Jokainen proteiini koostuu vähintään 100 yhteenkuuluvasta aminohaposta. Erilaisia aminohappoja on 21.
Näistä aminohapoista kolmeatoista keho tuottaa itse (ei välttämättömät aminohapot) ja muita kahdeksaa ei keho itse pysty tuottamaan (välttämättömät aminohapot). Välttämättömiä aminohappoja saadaan riittävästi terveellisestä ja monipuolisesta ravinnosta.
